Dear Delegates,
My name is Marcus Harcus and I’m running for City Council here in the 4th Ward. I’m a Northside native son with a bold vision for a better North Minneapolis: a healthy place where people want to move and live long-term, a good place to raise kids, a clean, safe, vibrant and peaceful place with a deep sense of community, strong infrastructure and enriching opportunities. I believe that by positioning myself in the City Council office I can successfully advocate for and help organize our community to increase civic participation, hold our City government accountable, promote good neighborliness and improve social and economic conditions on the Northside. If you are OPEN to LOCAL CHANGE then please consider nominating me for the DFL endorsement.
“Who is Marcus Harcus?” I’m a professional organizer with a background in community development and youth development. My relevant experience includes facilitating community visioning, event organizing, project management, public policy training, and micro-entrepreneurial training. I am a writer, family man, a homeowner and experienced renter who despises slum lording.
I’m proposing a new model of community engagement from City Hall. I believe people who are impacted by issues should be involved in democratic decision-making processes to address them. Collectively, we the taxpayers have majority ownership in the City of Minneapolis. However, City Hall has not been a community-friendly place because it is run by a “downtown culture of insiders” and the Northside has been largely left out. North Minneapolis needs effective political leadership that can leverage the power of community members working together cooperatively, proactively and consistently. I believe I can provide and want to demonstrate the kind of leadership change our community needs on the City Council.
When I’m elected we will organize a Northside Community Coalition, a massive and diverse network of residents committed to representing and serving the best interests of our residential quality of life. Every 4th Ward resident interested in joining the Northside Community Coalition will identify issues they want to help the community address. I will keep you informed and genuinely invite you to participate in the political process at City Hall. We will discuss public policy and community economic development plans on a regular, ongoing basis. I will create an interactive website for the 4th Ward, produce a monthly electronic newsletter, convene monthly community meetings, schedule weekly office hours in the community, and make City Hall more accessible to Northsiders than ever before. I will consistently visit all of the neighborhoods of the 4th Ward throughout my term(s) in office to remain accessible to Camden neighbors and in touch with community realities.
MY PUBLIC POLICY AND COMMUNITY ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PRIORITIES FOR THE NORTHSIDE INCLUDE:
- Overcoming the foreclosure crisis
- Reversing economic disinvestment
- Establishing fair property taxation
- Youth development, family stability, senior services
- Educational , economic and recreational opportunities
- Community organizing
- Crime prevention for a safe community
What is your vision for the Northside? What kind of City Council Member do you want to represent and serve the 4th Ward?
