The Northside Community Coalition Campaign is a call to action. I’m calling on Northside residents, businesses, community organizations, community institutions and our government to act collectively to improve our neighborhoods by getting civically engaged and taking active responsibility for the health and wellness of our community.
I want to help organize a Northside Community Coalition to facilitate effective community visioning, community planning and community development in order to:
- Comprehensively serve the needs of the community’s social and economic challenges
- Improve our residential quality of life by fostering an increasingly widespread sense of community (neighborliness)
- Creating viable opportunities for youth development and family empowerment
- Reverse economic disinvestment
The Northside will engage City Hall on an ongoing basis, challenging and supporting our City Council to serve the best interests of our residential quality of life. Getting involved in electoral politics is important, but what happens between the election cycles is more important than an election, therefore voting is not enough! We need to hold our elected officials accountable throughout their term(s) to ensure that City Hall is serving us well by contributing to public policy.
I envision a Northside with the highest voter turn-out, but more importantly, the best political representation based on the best community engagement and civic participation. A well organized community can contribute to improving the social, economic and environmental conditions that depress our neighborhoods in ways that our government and disconnected individuals or groups cannot. I envision a Northside Community Coalition organizing an effective community that can redeem the negative reputation that North Minneapolis has throughout the Twin Cities metro area.
