NOTE TO ALL NORTHSIDE RESIDENTS - 3RD, 4TH & 5TH WARDS:
The official neighborhood and ward boundaries in Minneapolis are far more significant to the City’s government than they are for the majority of residents. Many residents probably aren’t even familiar with most of these map lines.
The health of the more stable North Minneapolis neighborhoods is dependent on the health of the more challenged Northside neighborhoods. We must promote regional equity and cross-neighborhood cooperation to improve the overall health and vitality of all neighborhoods in our beloved Northside.
If you are like me, a Northsider who has lived here for much, most, or all of your life, then the Northside is the Northside, regardless of Camden and Near North designations. Although I’ll honor and promote the identities and unique features of the many different neighborhoods and respect ward jurisdictions (which are altered every decade following Federal Census population updates), I want you all to know that I care deeply about the entire Northside (& the entire City, State, Country and planet). I will work closely with the other City Council members representing the rest of the Northside (3rd Ward and 5th Ward), hopefully enlisting them in the Northside Community Coalition Campaign, which must become a long-term mass movement to be successful on a sustainable basis! Our 4th Ward will build a community coalition, and I’m hoping we can expand this initiative to include all of North Minneapolis. If we establish a solid model of community organizing for robust civic engagement, perhaps it can be replicated throughout the city to genuinely and significantly involve residents in governing our city.
4th Ward residents, remember that you will be my primary constituents. This requires and compels me to prioritize service to you and our Ward. However, understand that the City Council governs the entire City of Minneapolis. I will work closely with the representatives of the other 12 City Wards in service of our 1 City of Minneapolis while representing the 4th Ward passionately. 7 Council member votes (the majority of 13) decide any and all full Council actions for any 1 issue, property, block, business, neighborhood, City department, etc., so I’ll be diligently lobbying my colleagues for us!
Residential quality of life for individuals, families and communities (geographic, social and cultural) will be my primary concern as your City Council representative, always!
Sincerely,
Marcus Harcus |
